Automation is the modification of a process in which the sequence of steps had been performed by human judgment and adapting it such that physical (mechanical, electrical, electronic) items perform part of the sequencing.

Mechanical cams driven from wind or water wheel have been used since ancient times. These are a form of automation. Each step help to ensure that processes are accomplished in a repeatable, consistent manner. This multiplies the efficiency of other human decisions.
